  • Create a Platform around a popular service
  • Produce and sell Online Courses
  • Start your own Online Marketing Company
  • Flipping Websites
  • Become a Freelancer
  • Create a Niche Directory Website
  • Create a Niche Classifieds Website
  • Build a Web Hosting Business
  • Start your own Online Store

Now as you can tell, this is not the conventional list of easy to start online businesses. These businesses are going to take quite a bit of resources to complete and maintain, but the advantage is that the barrier to entry is very high which means that you are not going to have a lot of competition.

So let’s get started.

Create an Online Platform around a popular service.

The super successful online businesses all have one major thing in common and that’s the fact that they have created platforms for large groups of people to gather together around a single idea, here are some examples

The most obvious are the Social Media Sites that have been around for about two decades, so we all know about them, but what about the newer platforms, now there’s an interesting topic.

Wework.com

Wework.com looked at the rental industry and came up with a completely revolutionary idea of renting out complete blocks of office space in a building or on a floor. So what they do is that they will find a floor or a building that meets their strict criteria, then they negotiate a long term lease with the owner of the building and once they complete these negotiations their utmost brilliance begins to shine.

The rented space that they aquire is then meticulously planned out by the square metre to make full use of the floor space. The results are astonishing to say the least. Whether you are just starting out or an established business they will have something that suits your needs.

The bulk of their space is divided into one massive community office where someone starting out can practically rent out some space at a desk shared by multiple other people. They go as far as taking care of everything from your internet and printing needs, your snack and beveridge preferences to the amount of space you need to operate in, so all you need to do is pitch up and get on with your work.

The office space soon becomes a community of people who provide services for one another, but on a more important level, you get groups of people that begin to collaborate through their services and ideas and this is the biggest benefit to them as the feedback is immediate and usually so too are the solutions and improvements on their ideas. Collaboration also allows people to create groups that offer better solutions and that leads to benefits for everyone.

These guys really nailed this idea, so if you have the budget, Zimbabwe could be the perfect place to get a project like this off the ground. My advice, if you considering this idea, be thorough and work quickly, when Zimbabwe starts to come right you going to do very well.

Airbnb.com

Airbnb has an interesting story which has been repeated several times so we not going to go into that, but if you want to know more about this, judge type in Airbnb Story into google or better yet on Youtube, it’s a fascinating story. The remarkable thing about Airbnb is that they came up with an idea based on a need that their founder had. The idea was slow to take off but these guys eventually interrupted the entire hotel industry.

So the basic idea is that if you have some additional space in your home that is practically doing nothing for most of the year, you can rent it out through the Airbnb platform to people travelling through your local area, who want a place to stay for a couple of nights. The service has helped both travellers and home owners with a great win win service. The Hotel Industry certainly took a beating with this group.

Airbnb has now taken off globally and believe it or not we even have listings here in Zimbabwe. Consider something like this may be a little more difficult considering the fact that their reach has nothing to do with their location, however, there is always enough room for one more offering a slightly different take on their business model.

Uber.com

Another platform that has interrupted an entire industry was none other than Uber. Their business model is unique in that it allows ordinary people like you and I to make use of their platform to offer our private vehicles as a kind of taxi service. It benefits the owner of the vehicle, as he makes a bit of extra income and the people making use of the service, as it tends to be a more personal service and in a cleaner, safer environment. The fares are cheaper and so everybody wins.

As a matter of interest to those of you living in Zimbabwe, Econet have created their own version of this service and they have called it Vaya. So for those of you who have a decent car, and are keen to make a little extra in this way get in touch with them and sign up. I’m pretty sure you might need to have a few training courses to get up to speed, but it could end up being a nice little career choice for those of you who are interested.

Anyway enough examples, I’m sure you get the point. Here in Zimbabwe, we have an unemployment crises. If you’re an entrepreneur looking to create something of value, why not consider creating a platform which can benefit the masses? I have an idea for you, run with it if you would like.

My idea is simple, we have a massive unemployment in this country and we have a situation where people with quality skills are busy selling tomatoes on the street. Now, how many times have you had a leaking pipe in your home and you couldn’t get hold of a plumber to come and fix it quickly, or your maid fell ill and suddenly you had no one to clean your home or attend to your children, the examples are endless. Creating a platform that could bring these two groups of people together at a reasonable fee would most likely take off in this country. Especially considering that a very common search term in Zimbabwe is jobs, it would a service to the country and to its people, everyone wins and the owners walk away with a very nice business model. So there you have it, my gift to you.

By the way, Yes I am considering doing this, but it’s a free world and ideas are a dime a dozen, so if you create this platform, more power to you.

Produce and Sell Online Courses

This is something that has taken off recently, with the available technology we have seen on the internet. If you are a professional of any field, you can create a various video courses in your area of expertise and there are two main ways to go about selling your content.

You can create an account on Udemy, upload your course content and let them handle all the sales and marketing, which many people do, but lately there has also been a trend towards also hosting your own website and offering that content on it, on either a course by course sale, or you have the option to offer an annual subscription.

This subject is something to keep an eye on, my opinion is that this is going to be huge in the years to come.

Start your Own Online Marketing Company

If you have spent enough time creating websites and doing all the Search Engine Optimization, both onsite and offsite and if you have a decent amount of Social Media Experience, then you might want to consider starting your own Online Marketing Company.

Many businesses have already got a website, but what i have personally found is that the vast majority of websites, especially in Zimbabwe really just are online brochures. There is so much opportunity to create amazing websites that actually become an asset for the business owners, but the circumstances often lead to a situation where the website is just thrown together and left to just run. No time taken to properly sort out the SEO, no real blog posts and no interest beyond just having something up to show their prospective customers.

Businesses are missing a huge opportunity by doing this. A website can be much more than just a bunch of static online pages. With proper use of content, some good SEO, social media skills and a will to succeed, this is definitely a business that you want to consider. The market is ripe and the opportunities are just around the corner.

My advice to you if this is something that you may be interested in, is to start doing you research now, polish up your skills and get prepared. Once businesses start to see the real value in being online and view their web presence as a asset, there is going to be a huge move in this area. If you are ready for it, you are in for a really good run.

Flipping Websites

If you have the ability to create websites with good content, you know how to do all the SEO stuff that we keep talking about, a great business opportunity lies in creating websites dedicated to a particular niche. Generally a new domain will begin to start ranking at around the 35 week mark, so you have quite a bit of time to research your niche and put some pretty useful and entertaining content on the website.

As I said, it takes a bit of time before the search engines are going to start ranking the site, but once this begins to happen, if you start to appeal to a large enough audience then you need to consider monetizing the site so that it can generate some passive income for you.

Once the traffic starts to stabilize and you are getting a decent amount of page views, you can either continue to collect the revenue from the site, or you might want to opt to sell the website and get a large one off payout. You can count on getting roughly between 20 to 30 times your annual income, depending on how well you setup the website to begin with.

What a lot of people do in this market is that they might start looking for these niche sites that are already on the market, a great place to look would be empireflippers.com. Generally, you would look for a niche site that you may be interested in, buy it and make the improvements the site desperately needs, get it generating some income and take advantage of the domain age and authority that the site has already incurred.

Empireflippers.com has got a very good reputation for the quality of websites that they sell, but nevertheless be aware that you could be taken for a ride, so just keep your wits about you and do some solid research before you commit.

Become a Freelancer

If you have any particular skills that works in a virtual environment, but you don’t want to invest in your own agency for whatever reasons you may have, you can take advantage of platforms such as freelancer.com to get a that extra income coming in.Generally web designers, seo experts, I T support, content marketers, etc, these are the kinds of services that you can offer on these platforms.

A request will be announced on the platform and you simply bid for the job. You will probably have a few short interviews with the person requesting the services and if you know your stuff and can convince your prospect, you have a decent chance of being awarded the job. I have noticed that even companies often set themselves up on these platforms because of the additional revenue that they can get from being present on these sites.

There is a lot of competition, but it’s a great way to earn extra income.

Create a Niche Directory Website

Creating a Directory Website can be a great source of income, however, creating a niche directory site has even more potential. If you can create enough traffic through blogging to one of these directory sites, you could easily charge each company on your directory a small monthly fee to have a presence on your site. If you have enough customers, let’s say around 50 to 100 businesses on your niche directory, you could have some decent passive income flowing into your coffers on a monthly basis.

However, my advice to you is to make sure that your customers are actually getting monthly business coming in from your site, so think really carefully to make sure that they fit into the niche and that you are getting a large enough audience for your customers to gain from it.

Create a Niche Classifieds Website

As in the example above, a niche classifieds website could really have an advantage for businesses that are part of that niche. For example, let’s say you started a car classifieds website. There are so many car sales companies in Zimbabwe and the product is virtually the same no matter which sales company you approach. Now despite some cars being in better condition to others, the product is about the same, so there is no real differentiator to say that a certain car company is better because it offers a particular service. They sell cars, all of them!

So creating a niche site like this, if you can get the bulk of the companies selling on your site, then the others will be forced to follow or risk losing sales.

Now I hear you saying that we already have a large classifieds site in Zimbabwe. Yes, we do. However, there is so much noise around that website with all the different products, that a buyer is easily distracted into looking at other things. With a niche site, you’re targeting one product or a very small group of similar products and you going to get your traffic.

As in the example above, remember you need to create an audience before your real customers are going to part with their cash so get creative and get the traffic.

Build a Web Hosting Business

This is an interesting topic for those of you who may have a web design agency or an Online Marketing Company if you are considering starting any one of these. It makes a lot of sense to also host your customer’s websites.

The reason this makes sense is that often you create the website, do the search engine optimization and then many times you won’t hear from your customer again. By offering to host the websites for your customer you can effectively get some year on year additional income from this service that you are providing. They will most likely contact you every time they have a problem with their email or hosting account, so you will be able to maintain a much longer relationship with them.

This is a great up-sell, it takes a lot of work to establish, but done properly you can benefit tremendously through Web Hosting.

Start your own Online Store

Starting an online store is tricky because of the fact that it is difficult to collect the funds for purchases of your products, but creating an online store now and using a bit of creativity you can definitely save a huge sum of money from not having to rent out shop space.

More and more people are getting used to the idea of shopping online and the potential increases every single day. If you have a lot of physical or virtual products that you need to sell it is very easy to transition from brick and mortar to virtual. It might set you back financially but the payoff in the years to come will definitely be huge.

My recommendation, if you sell many products, get an ecommerce store as soon as you can afford it, but pay attention to detail and make sure your site is super secure, get your SEO done properly and seriously consider a pay per clicks budget for google and bing.

Now let’s look at some of the methods that have been around for a little while longer and have proven very successful even to this day.

Here’s 7 additional online business ideas for you in 2019:

1. Affiliate marketing

This is probably one of the easiest ways you can make money online. With affiliate marketing, all you have to do is promote other people’s products on your website and if someone in your audience buys the product through your affiliate link, you will get the commision.

There are 2 main ways that you can do affiliate marketing:

i) Information products – this involves promoting products like eBooks, workout programs, video series, membership sites, among others. This can earn you as much as 50% or more in commission from these affiliate products.

ii) Amazon partners – Amazon is the largest online store in the world. Every year, Amazon makes hundreds of billions in profits and with their affiliate program, you can have a tiny piece of the pie. Through Amazon Partners, you can make money by redirecting buying customers to the Amazon store, whatever your customer purchases on Amazon, you’ll get a small commission for it

2. Start your own blog

A blog is a great place to share stories, opinions, information, or any other content that people find interesting, informative, or entertaining.

Starting a blog is easy, but turning it into a moneymaking investment can be a little tricky for some people. First, you need create great content which is normally educational, helpful or entertaining to draw people to the blog and keep them coming back.

We have some posts on the topic which we encourage you to read, but if your blog is done properly it is definitely a way to create some additional passive income for the long term. Creating affiliate links that relate to your blog or the topic that you are writing about, selling some ad space and maybe selling digital products all functional very well for your blog.

3. Podcasting

Podcasting is sharing audio files on the internet, just like blogging but using audio only of a certain topic or a number of topics that people find interesting such as music, politics, religion, movies, etc, the list is endless.

To get started, you need to find a niche that you are familiar with and have a lot to say about. You also need to improve your communication skills so that you can share your message clearly and in a way that keeps your audience interested and engaged.

After you grow your audience, you will find that there are many ways to monetize your podcast from ads to affiliate links.

4. Write an eBook

This one is tough and I take my hat off to anyone who will take the time to writer and publish their ebook. I haven’t written a book and for now it just doesn’t appeal to me. But this is not about me, it’s about you so if this is something you want to do then here is the little advice that I could possibly offer.

If you have never written a book before, then start a blog, get into the habit of writing regular content and publish it to your website. I think over time, you will begin to get your own style of writing and you will also start to attract an audience. The audience is probably going to be your best asset because of the feedback that they give you.

Over time as you improve your skills you will also be able to see what kinds of topics keep your audience engaged and what gets no response. Personally this is the course of action that I would take, but again I just don’t have the slightest clue.

Once you have completed your master piece, you will probably sell it on your blog, which by now has some decent traffic, but the other most obvious option would be amazon.

5. Become a Youtuber

YouTube has grown to become a huge source of income for many people around the world and the best part is, anyone with a camera can become Youtube sensation. There are thousands of YouTube channels discussing every topic you can possibly think of.

Being a Youtuber is actually a career path now, and as long as you are entertaining and have a message to offer the world, so have a pretty good chance of doing well on this platform. Monetizing your channel will most likely progress naturally as companies are always looking for channels that help promote their brands, so a very good overall career choice if you have a charismatic character.

6. Drop shipping

Drop shipping is where you set up an online store selling other people’s products. Your job is only to provide the store; you don’t handle the any of the manufacturing or shipping process. You don’t even need to see the products you are selling. After every sale, you get a commission.

The benefit of Drop shipping is that there is no risk because you never have to invest any money buying stock that potentially wouldn’t sell. You also don’t need a lot of capital as is the case with normal e-commerce stores.

7. Webinars

Webinars are a great way to market a product, service, or educational courses. Basically, you’re offering lots of advice and tips for free after which you pitch your product or service with a goal of securing a as many sales as possible.

In conclusion

I really hope that i have given you some interesting ideas for your website business, this really is just a small handful of what can be accomplished on the internet, it’s definitely not an exhaustive list but perhaps you may get some idea of whether or not this is for you.

I do recommend that you at least keep the idea in mind that having an online presence is really very important and please avoid just putting up an online brochure style website just so that your business is seen as legitimate. There really is so much more that your website can do for you and I promise you, if you take the time to turn your website into the asset that it is meant to be, it will bring you a decent return.
